After many years of photographing Mt. Rainier and having a few opportunities to visit this winter, I thought it would be interesting to compare how the same location looks in both winter and summer. Although we hiked to the same places-the trails-or lack of- were very different in the winter and I did not feel that "I knew where I was" even though I have hiked the area often! These pictures are of the same place, although they may not have been taken from the same spot or angle.
Notes:
The second set of pictures is of the mountain and the "valley crevasse". We were closer up to the mountain in the winter. Note the line of trees on the right side of the picture. In the summer picture, we were standing further away from the trees. In the winter picture we were standing just above the trees. It is easy to see that the landmarks pretty much line up-except for the tree line.
To take the picture of the Narada Falls I was standing on 4-5 feet of snow, so my angle was from a higher perspective albeit standing in the exact same place!--look at the bridge over the waterfall to see the difference.
The last two pictures of the mountain from the visitor center: In the winter scene I was standing about 20-30 feet further left from the Fall picture and I may have been a bit more zoomed in, but not by much. The point to notice is how many young trees are buried in snow! And if you study the two pictures you can find the same trees in each picture.
