Mt. Haleakala is 10,000 feet above sea level and is located near the south east side of Maui. It is worth going up there for sunrise and maybe even for sunset. You do need to make reservation to secure a spot since it has become a very popular activity. On your way up the mountain you will see lots of farms with horses, cattle, and meadows. The scenery is gorgeous!
I have included three pictures of Haleakala taken at the 9500 foot level where the Sliding Sands hike begins. It is a major hike and goes on for miles . If you just go to the trail head, you will enjoy an amazing view. The land appears to be moonscape. You also get the feeling that if you were to walk all the way down to the crater floor and then walk across the crater to the clouds you would fall off the face of the earth. The further you walk down the sandy gravely trail the more majestic your views and experience. There are cinder cones made of copper (red dirt) and iron (green dirt). Other hiking opportunities are located at lower elevations. These hikes are in lush green /forestry areas.
The other picture was taken along the very long North shore of Kaanapali beach. This was taken about an hour before sunset. Most of the beach is beach and sand. There is about 35 feet of trees.
